BORDEAUX (March 21, 2019) - American business magnate Zaya S. Younan acquired Château La Croix Younan (formerly Château La Croix Fourney), a property of 9 hectares producing Saint-Emilion Grand Cru in 2017. From the beginning, his focus was on making a limited quantity of exceptional wine to compete with the best wines in the region. Discover both the distinctive 2018 vintage and the history of the Château La Croix Younan at the Primeurs Tasting events, April 1-4 in Saint-Emilion.
Zaya S. Younan, Chairman & CEO of La Grande Maison Younan Collection, remarks, “It always has been a dream of mine to own a winery in the prestigious Saint-Emilion region. I have big ambitions for Château La Croix Younan. I plan on making one of the finest wines in world-famous Saint-Emilion, which is a World Heritage Site. We have made significant improvements in our vineyard and production facility in order to make an exceptional wine that represents our brand. We believe the 2018 vintage will demonstrate our commitment to excellence.” Château La Croix Younan’s technical team is headed up by Dr. Alain Raynaud and Mr. Antoine Schmitt. Dr. Raynaud is the former President of the Union des Grands Crus and one of the founders and current President of the Grand Cercle de Vins de Bordeaux. Mr. Antoine Schmitt began his career in the industry at Chateau Cheval Blanc (1st Grand Cru Classé A Saint-Emilion) during the 1992 campaign.
Alain Raynaud notes, “After demonstrating his interest in France, acquiring a number of chateaux-hotels and golf courses, Zaya S. Younan has invested in the world of wine, the quintessence of good French taste, by acquiring Château La Croix Younan in Saint-Emilion. No doubt that his tenacity and entrepreneurial spirit will quickly bring out the potential of the existing vineyard, to which we hope to add additional acreage, to produce truly extraordinary wines.”
The top priorities have been the restructuring of the vineyard and the upgrading of a specialized and efficient winemaking process. The 6.3 hectares of Merlot have been fully planted, and the 2.7 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon were densified to 9000 vines per hectare. Traditional plowing and vine protection techniques are used throughout the vineyard . No herbicides or pesticides are used. Regular and severe pruning is practiced for a production voluntarily limited to 35 hectoliters per hectare. Depending on the section, leafing, thinning, and cutting are carried out to allow the grapes to ripen as long as possible without developing botrytis.
The manual harvest in small crates (10 kgs) took place from October 7 to 27, 2018. Despite harvests
that may appear late, the berries were whole and not deteriorated, and the average degree of
alcohol is between 14°C and 14.5°C.
The winemaking is done in part in 20 hectoliter vats and 5 hectoliter Sylvain barrels. This technique
of integral vinification, developed by Dr. Raynaud in 2001, permits the development of wines that
are full, round, smooth and very balanced. Integral vinification represents about 35% of the
harvest, requiring a qualified and sizable workforce. Aging is then done in new French oak barrels
for 60% of the production.
Zaya S. Younan and the experienced team at Château La Croix Younan are very proud of the work
done on this 2018 vintage and invite you to enjoy it during the week of the Primeurs at the
different official venues, or by coming directly to the Château, with or without an appointment. For
a list of places where you can sample Château La Croix Younan 2018, contact the Château.
Mr. Younan affirms, “I have a passion for French history and tradition, including fine wines. Château
La Croix Younan 2018 promises to be an exceptional vintage. We intend for our wines to set the bar
for quality and excellence. The best is yet to come.”
